Verdict
Be mindful that I only know the Insta360 One R on paper and have not purchased one to explore. The price point compares with the GoPro Max, though there are entry packages that start cheaper in the neighborhood of $430-480. It is possible to create a custom bundle that meets your needs and expectations. Compared to the Insta360 One X, this camera is in a unique class and far exceeds its predecessor in terms of functionality, options, and technology. The One X is still a very good standalone camera that is intuitive and good quality.
The real competitor is the GoPro Max. GoPro makes very good cameras with top of the line materials and technology. However, we may be seeing Insta360 establishing a claim on the 360 camera market. For shooting standard (flat) 4k video, nothing now will really compare to the GoPro Hero 8. However, for 360 video in the area of $500, you will need to do some research to decide between the One R and the Max.
